Building a Custom Home in Dallas? When to Hire an Interior Designer
Building a custom home is exciting—but the number of decisions involved can become overwhelming surprisingly quickly.
Flooring. Cabinetry. Lighting. Plumbing. Tile. Paint. Hardware. Furniture. Window treatments.
And many of those decisions affect one another.
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that an interior designer comes in once construction is finished.
For a truly cohesive home, we recommend bringing your designer into the process much earlier.
Ideally, Before All the Selections Begin
The earlier we're involved, the more opportunities we have to look at the home as a whole.
Your builder is focused on building a beautiful, structurally sound home. Your architect is thinking about the architecture.
Your interior designer is thinking about how you're actually going to live inside it.
That can mean catching things like furniture placement before electrical plans are finalized, thinking through window treatments before trim details are selected, or making sure a dining-room chandelier will actually be centered over the future dining table.
Small decisions during construction can make an enormous difference once the home is furnished.
Your Finishes Should Work With Your Furniture
We don't think of construction selections and furnishings as two separate design projects.
The stain on the kitchen cabinetry influences the dining furniture. The flooring affects the rugs. The lighting affects the overall mood of the room. The architecture influences the scale of the furniture.
When those decisions are made together, the finished home feels cohesive instead of pieced together.
Earlier Planning Can Prevent Expensive Changes
Some of the most frustrating design problems are also the easiest to prevent.
An outlet in the wrong location.
A television connection that doesn't work with the furniture layout.
A dining fixture centered in the room instead of over the table.
A window configuration that makes drapery difficult.
When we're able to review plans early, we can think through these details before changing them becomes expensive—or impossible.
Don't Wait Until Move-In to Think About Furniture
Furniture lead times can be significant, especially when we're ordering customized pieces.
Waiting until construction is complete to begin furnishing can mean moving into a beautiful new home and then waiting months for it to actually feel finished.
Ideally, we want the furniture plan underway well before move-in so everything can come together as seamlessly as possible.
